This last Friday in the Hobart mall we had a wonderful time ministering for the Lord. The weather has been fine which always helps with gathering a crowd and encouraging people to stop and talk. A number of repeat visitors came to speak with the team:

Mr. O – a catholic student who has come repeatedly to encourage us in the face of opposition and to show solidarity on the issues that we agree on. He and I have a number of things that we disagree on but the debates are always congenial and end on a positive note.

Mr. B – a repeat visitor who has had many challenges over the years. He came to encourage us and to talk and be (I hope) encouraged as we share life together. In the face of many challenges God is moving Mr. B towards an affection for Christ and we continue to share Christ with him and pray for him.

Mr. M – an Italian gentleman who comes frequently to the mall to listen to the preaching. There are many different questions he brings and this week the consideration was geostationary satellites. He stayed to listen to the gospel preached and spoke with us a little afterwards.

Older gentleman – stood listening while I preached the gospel and afterwards when I approached him asking what he thought of the gospel preaching he simply said, “You preach it well brother.” I thanked him for the encouragement and after talking with him said farewell with, “God bless you brother.”

There were many opportunities to preach and pray and read the Word over the course of the afternoon and even when there were atheists using the area there were friends stopping by to fellowship and pray with us. So, God blessed us when there was time to speak at speaker’s corner and when there was no time to speak.

There are some who have treasured the hope that the preaching in the mall will be stopped. Days like today make me confident that God will continue to bless His people and add to His people regardless what form outreach in Hobart takes into the future. It matters not how the Word goes out, the gospel will conquer the world and draw countless people to Christ our Lord.

Dear friends there has been a busy couple of months that have flown by this summer. My apologies for not writing sooner, a number of you are probably wondering if I’ve fallen off the bottom side of Australia. No, the work continues down her in Tassie and there are many good things that have come from the work lately.

I have had the privilege to have the support of Kieron, Cynthia, Penny, and Monica over these last couple of months. They are a wonderful help and encouragement. Kieron has particularly been a great help and his ability to connect with others never ceases to amaze me. I have even petitioned him a number of times to step into conversations with hecklers and it has been great to see people opening up to him.

The work in the mall has continued in the signature manner that it has always, we have a big focus on preaching and reading the Word aloud and handing out tracts when we can. We are a small team and often need to focus on one or two things at a time. We have been able to have the Bible table out a little more over the summer with Kieron’s car’s help.

Also, we have had a number of great regular conversations, it’s almost like there is a scheme going to ensure that all sorts of wonderful people to come meet with us. Many of these folks are youth and it is good to see their passion and idealism, but there are also quite a number of older folks who come and seem to know just the right thing to say to encourage and help us along.

Needless to say, there are still quite a few opponents. Most of them come and then go again having said little. Some apparent opponents become opportunities to have some fun and joke around with people and turn opponents into smiling acquaintances. Sadly, there are also a number of people who can’t seem to keep the council rules for Speakers Corner. I’ve been forced to write to the council a number of times, asking that they would intervene. Thankfully the Hobart City Council has been very helpful and has often reigned in the worst of the bad actors.

In all of these things God is faithful and there is great blessing that comes from the work. We have lately seen a number of people find a church through contact with us and there have been a few conversions that have occurred praise God!

On Sunday, by God's amazing faithfulness we have started Practical Training Outreach. God has sent total 10 Labourers on this day to learn and be equipped better for preaching this glorious gospel. We had 2 sessions, the first session was with Niki & Mark who were very passionate about preaching the gospel and they were already familiar with Law & the Gospel method so after short introduction and sharing briefly about how outreach is done we went out to the Bourke st to preach the gospel !. Please refer to Niki & Mark's report for the conversation that we had.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Martin for his commitment to evangelism and giving us “on site” training. One of our most interesting conversations was with Naphtali and Nathan - a couple Jamaican Rastafarians. Due to their religion having Judeo-Christian foundations, they were quite knowledgeable about some parts of the Old Testament. They were engaged and asked thoughtful questions, although seemed to have no view on the afterlife. We used the Coronavirus, as a way to explain that our sin contaminates us, so we cannot be in God’s presence and that is why we need Jesus to de-contaminate us with the washing of his blood. We gave them tracts and pray they receive Jesus. Niki & Mark

On Saturday, it was rainy and quite windy at times but by God has faithfully sent us around 8 labourers to share the gospel to the lost souls. As it was cloudy and there was high chance of possible rain we decided to skip open air preaching. By God's grace, we had many interesting chats with non-believers. 

Our first chat for the night was with a couple who were surprisingly humble and receptive we started with casual chat and when we question them about their thoughts on eternity they seemed bit surprised by the question. Their names were Josh and Steph.

They gave answers that were quite common such as 'becoming a dust and hoping to get to somewhere good'. They were not atheist but more agnostic so we share simple analogy about why creation is true and they seemed enlightened with the analogies that builder has to exist as we see the buildings and painter has to exist for beautiful painting to be painted. As we moved to conversation to the law of God, they were laughing and smiling as they were realising that according to the law of God they were not only bad person but worse than that but as gospel was shared in the light of the law of God they started to see the need of Jesus Christ and they took it seriously. We urged them to turn away from their sins and believe in Jesus Christ.  please pray for Steph and Josh as you read this report.

There was a Muslim who I had a chat too that claimed he was going to heaven by his good works and he can never know when the good works would be enough. I asked him whether he believes Allah is perfect, he replied yes. Then I asked him does he believe he is a sinner, he replied, yes. So I asked him, how can Allah who is perfect allow a sinner into heaven by his sinful good works? He couldn't answer the question. I proceeded to tell him, in Christianity we don't go to heaven by good works, but by faith.

It's because of Christ's sacrifice upon the cross. I told him it's what's called double transfer (or double imputation) that on the cross Christ who is true man and true God, took your sin and was punished for it, God's wrath was poured out on Him, it pleased the Lord to crush Him (Isaiah 53). We also, see the love of God at the cross that Christ took your place. So Christ took your sin and if you truly repent of sin and trust in Christ alone you are given Christ's perfect robe by faith and go to heaven by what He has done, your sins are forgiven, your sin debt has been paid for, one that you cannot pay, since you are in debt I told him. I asked him do you understand? Does this make sense? He replied yes, I understand a little bit better what Christianity is about. Please pray for him

From Huy Do :- 

In the morning, I had watched one of the episodes of “way of the Master”, during which the guest spoke about her evangelistic encounter with a man and a woman with a dog named “Zoey” and asked about the name of the dog, which is translated as “life” from the Greek. In the same day, on the evening, I encountered a young lady with the small flipchart, I asked if I could ask a few questions, she agreed. I asked about her name, she said that it was Zoey, I asked if she knew what it meant, she said she is Greek Orthodox so she knew that it meant “life”, to which I showed her the cover of the flipchart “what happens after life?”, and the conversation started. She was very attentive and listened, she understood the Gospel, please pray the Lord would change her heart.

On Saturday the whole team gathered at Mahabandula Park (what I’ve previously been calling Sule Park). Being the weekend, there were many people relaxing and keen to talk.

We also had a team from the New Life Church come to join us on outreach. For many this was their first time, so they did a lot of watching and listening.

It was a pleasure to have two of them join me and my translator - so we were a team of four. One of them told me that she had a burning desire to share her faith, but she was very nervous.

In the afternoon, I had two wonderful gospel conversations, and I wondered if the newbies would like to give it a try - so I asked. To my surprise, the lady who had said she was nervous was willing to give it a try. I double checked, to make sure I wasn’t applying any pressure - and she confirmed she was ready. But I could see that she was very nervous.

I picked an older lady to approach, and I decided to get things started. She did not want to have a conversation (but soon after, she came to take a few tracts from me), and so we moved to a couple that was next to her - they were happy to talk. I got the conversation rolling by going through the building/universe analogy, and then I passed over to my nervous friend to take them through the law. She took to it like a duck to water. I couldn’t believe it (see the photo with my bemused look in the background)! My translator & I stayed to help her when needed. But she shared the law and the gospel using the mini flip chart herself. Well done!

There was no stopping them after that, both of the newbies had an animated gospel conversation with another couple. They were eagerly taking them through the pages of the flip chart and explaining the glorious gospel of Jesus!

This is what evangelism is all about! Encouraging and equipping Christians to step out and share the words of eternal life. Reader, if you are not already involved, may you be encouraged too. Step out - get involved! Share the gospel of Jesus. :)

As per the photos, the day was filled with many, many gospel conversations.

On Sunday, the team split up and went to various churches or orphanages to teach. We then gathered for lunch at the orphanage that David Ling runs, and we ran another kids program in the afternoon where, of course, the gospel was shared (not for the first time!).

Battle Log for Toowong Village on the 18th of February, 2020 from 1330 to 1500.

This was the first time we started with three Cantonese speaking team members all from Hong Kong. As Johnny is still in Myanmar and Col was attending the funeral service of Lee Anne's Mum. Lily joined us later at 1420. The ministry started with a very low pace and inactive response at the initial stage. We encouraged each other to hold on and God did show his grace for us to have more meaningful contact later on. The stand out divine encounter was between Winnie and Jenny, after God blessed her with another chance of long sharing with Christy. (For details , please refer to her testimony in Chinese.)

 

So overall speaking, it was yet another gracious day of ministry helping us to wait before God for His initiative faith movement. I myself had seven contact as recap below.

1) Stuart a local UQ student who was the first one having accepted my tract and let me walked him to the bus stop. I just barely finished the nutshell of the Gospel when his bus arrived. I pray that the tract will be used by God to further soften his heart for salvation.

2) An UQ student from Hkg who has just arrived in Brisbane for half a year.. He appeared indifferent to the Gospel but still let me talk and talk with him to have lunch. I had only about 3 minutes to share the nutshell of the Gospel with the Novel Coronavirus as the analogy to sin that will make God bound away from us. He any way still took the tract and pray this was just the beginning of his journey of salvation.

3) Alice also an UQ student from NZ possibly a cross breed of white and Maori people. She is a girl of very kind heart and open mind taking the tract first when she cross the road at the traffic light and agreed to let me walk her to the bus stop. I was able to share the full gospel with her full attentive listening. Her facial expression told me that she was sincerely impressed and appeared very receptive. It was a pity again that the arrival of the bus cut short our conversation, giving her no time to response. So pray that God will do all the needed follow up work.

4) A girl from China whose Mum is a Christian and she got the tract before but not ever having a chat. So I walked her to the shopping centre and finished the nutshell of the gospel. Again her reaction was not very enthusiastic, but I have to learn to trust God that this walk of faith sharing will not go in vain.

5) Sebastian an UQ student of possibly Muslim background by his name. He got a tract from Winnie form the foot of the bridge and walked towards me at the traffic light. I asked him when he passed by if he would like to let me chat a bit about the tract. Without sign of rejection I walked and started sharing the Gospel with him. Then I received the most severe and blunt rejection of God and the perception of Heaven. With the inspiration of the Holy Spirit , I ignored the argument for the existence of God and Heaven, just went straight to the heart issue of human sin. He kept reiterating that being a good person and learn from our mistakes to become a better person should be the right attitude to lead our life. I used the analogy of Policeman booking a person for speeding, can this person use guarantee not to speed driving again to get empathy of the police to cancel the fine. The answer is of course no. This reviews to us clearly that it does not matter how many good things we have done and is going to do, but it matters if we have wrong doings that needed to subject to punishment? If yes than every one need Jesus to take our place to receive the punishment of eternal death we originally deserved to get. Despite of this clear analogy that he could not argue anymore, he still showed no remorse and refused to admit there is God that will punish us for our sin. He hooped on the bus without even taking the tract. Even so, I still believe my conversation with him was a divine appointment with God's purpose behind.

6) Marge and Carlson are the married couples as well as UQ student from India. I only got the time of crossing the road but I still manged to share the nutshell of the gospel to Marge. I planned to walk a longer time with them but it was interrupted by Yasmin who greeted me on the street.

7) That was Jenny the UQ student from China that Winnie had successfully gone through the Good Person test with her. I supplemented a few key points afterwards and gave her the contact for Power to Change. Jenny seemed to have found interest in understanding the demonstration of the Good Person Test.

Winnie was successful in getting Jenny to stop for letting Winnie to share the gospel with her by means of the Good Person test Hand held flip chart. I don't know Jenny background, but I bet she is from rural city of 2nd or 3rd lines province. Country girl are more open up than those city urban folk either in China or here in Australia.

感谢讚美主。雖然撒但阻礙，我的腳昨晚忽然有痛，但有主耶稣在旁，亦可以傳到福音。第一位少女，Christy 從澳門來，已经是基督徒，她肯定會上天堂，願意傳福音给其他人，我已经给她福音單章。第二是 Jenny, 從中国來，我對她説，信靠主耶稣，是份禮物，不用錢買的。我們的罪得到赦免。她説想認識多的真理，才信靠耶稣。謝謝關牧師给她名片，讓她找到教會，從中學習。感谢主今天的安排，雖然街上很多人都不接受單章，但有人願意留下聽，我們應當感恩。

Brief translation of Winnie's Sharing:

Praise and thanks God, despite the intended obstruction by Satan getting severe foot pain erupted last night as soon as she made up her mind to come, but the promised presence of Jesus enable me to share the Gospel freely. The first was a young lady from Macau. She is a Christian and know for sure she could go to heaven , she was inspired by me and promised to share the Gospel to other people. I gave her some of my tract. The second one was Jenny from China. I told her believing in Christ is like receiving a free gift of eternal life that cannot be earned by money. It is through Jesus our sin can be forgiven. She said she wanted to learn more about the Biblical truth before accepting Jesus. Thank to Rev Kwan giving Jenny a name card for contacting the Power to Change people to let her get connected with Christian student fellowship group and church consequently in order to learn and pursue God. Thanks God for His wonderful arrangement. We must give thanks for those who take the tract and or stop to chat. More so, we also thanks God for those rejection that helped us grow steadfastly trusting God.

I think this has been the busiest trip to Myanmar I’ve had. There is just so much opportunity for ministry, both in sharing the gospel with the lost, but also in sharing mutual love with the local Christians we are working with & the many orphans they support.

It is now Monday night, and I haven’t reported anything since last Wednesday. So over the next three evenings (the next three battle logs, including this one), I’m going to try to report on everything that’s been happening since Thursday on.

Thursday saw my team at a shopping center (Hledan) in the morning, and then at a university in the afternoon.

At the shopping center, the stand out conversation was with two young men. It actually started with one of them, but the other guy overheard what we were talking about, and he shuffled over and asked if he could join in. Of course! :) The first guy heard the gospel but ended up having to go, but I was able to have a deep conversation with the guy that shuffled into the conversation.

He said he didn’t have any religion. This did not mean that he was an Atheist, but that he wanted to learn about religion. If my memory serves me correctly, he came to understand the free gift of the gospel, but also understood the cost. He said he needed time to think about it - which is fair, but without applying any pressure, I did warn him that we do not know when we will die - there is an urgency to respond to the gospel!

The University is a great place for talking to English speakers! We have a favourite spot in front of Judson Church.

But my first gospel conversation of the afternoon started outside the library. There were about eight students dressed up in suits - they had just graduated (petroleum engineering). After learning that I wanted to talk about spiritual things, they invited me to the canteen where we could talk over a late lunch (for them). Two of them in particular did all the talking. Sadly, I did not get to share the gospel with them - the one that did most of the talking quickly understood the logic of what I was sharing, but became very resistant (although he was outwardly friendly and polite). But they all listened, and they all received tracts.

The team had many other wonderful gospel conversations throughout the afternoon.

Friday was a day off for the team in the morning and early afternoon before heading to an orphanage in the late afternoon to run a children's program.

But Andy & I didn’t go with the rest of the team. We ended up visiting the orphanage of one of our wonderful translators, Joshua. He and his wife are looking after 19 beautiful children. We first met Joshua last September. We hope to be able to practically help more. It is impossible to work with these precious people in the gospel and not want to get more closely involved in their lives. God loves the widow and the orphan! I intend to write more about this (in other channels).

A  hottish type of day somewhat ameliorated by the afternoon breeze and shady spots where we witnessed today at Wellington Point:

   .First with 2 J.W.s, Eric and Igor under a large shade tree with a breeze filtering through. The older one, Eric, seemed spiritually deaf, We were able to take Igor through the mini-flip chart and explain how we used Romans as a means of communicating the truth, e.g. he had never heard of the Reformation and the key doctrine of justification by faith alone. Still when all is said and done, we have to call on the Lord our God to work, even to granting saving faith to His people. Jn. 16:8 "...He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment"...

     Second, With Rodney & Michelle parents of 5 boys in a roofed picnic table area on the waterfront. He, being Roman Catholic we took them through the flip chart. He is still hung up on Purgatory but  she is working on this issue. The sufficiency of Christ's atoning work seems so difficult for those in cults to accept.

    With a few more tracts handed out, we headed home rejoicing. Pray also for the 2 John's gospel in a see-through plastic bag that I dropped; God's will use them for His glory.

For now and for ever and ever, to God alone be the glory.

On Tuesday the team split into smaller teams and spread out across Yangon to share the gospel, in conjunction with our local Christian translators. My team was at Sule Park. Unfortunately the park was closed as preparations were occurring for an event the following day. This didn’t hinder us, as there were many people on the streets for us to talk with.

I had lots of gospel conversations with people, with the help of my wonderful translator: Joshua. Some of them didn’t go well, some of them did. But something that I noticed was that other people would stop and listen to the words of life from a distance. At one point, as I was sharing with two young men on the sidewalk, a taxi pulled up beside us, and started listening. He interrupted to tell me, in broken English, that he was a Christian. I smiled and acknowledged him, but kept my attention on the two I was talking to. A few minutes later, he hopped out of his car, came up to me and gave me a cross - he said it was a gift for me. I was a bit confused, but I thanked him. He smiled, hopped back into his car and drove off.

The two guys I was talking to were actually part of the highlight conversation of the day. It was just after lunch, and the conversation went for nearly an hour. They said they were Christians, and so I asked them to tell me what I needed to do to go to heaven. They didn’t seem to know. So I asked if I could explain what I would tell someone if they wanted to know how to go to heaven. They were happy for me to do that, and so I took them through the mini flip chart and clearly explained the gospel to them. It seemed like it was the first time they had truly put the whole message together. They seemed very challenged and gladly received follow up tracts.

Today (Wednesday) the whole team was at Inya Lake sharing the gospel with many.

Again, the highlight conversation for me was just after lunch. A group of six people were happy to talk with me about the deep questions of life. They were very engaged, asking some difficult questions. But some of them seemed very challenged - understanding the logic of the free gift of forgiveness through faith in Jesus, and yet understanding the cost of accepting that gift, including letting go of Buddhism. After a long conversation, they all took copies of the gospel of John.

The local Christians we are working with are wonderful! It is an absolute privilege to be able to labour, in the gospel, alongside them.

Oh, PS, this is encouraging. Andy’s translator from Tuesday had a very encouraging testimony. The last time the team was in Myanmar was last September. One of the conversations from that trip resulted in a Muslim girl being receptive and appreciative of hearing the gospel. She came to church and was impacted by the love and witness of those that believe in the gospel. She worked through the cost and put her faith in Jesus shortly after - even in light of her family not being supportive. About a month ago she was baptised, and is giving true evidence of the grace of God in her life, in spite of her struggles. How encouraging is that! All glory to God!

Battle Log for Toowong Village on Thursday February 11th, 2020 from 1330 to 1500

Amidst the severe threat of the Novel Coronavirus in Australia, God grace was sufficient still for the three of us , Col, Yuen Hang and Hung to report duty at Toowong. Many students have returned though a large number of them from China have also been blocked from re-entering Australia if their travel began at any city of China except Hong Kong. The spread of the virus has been well contained and remains at the level of 15 for a few days. So the real threat of getting infected is greatly minimized. But the real obstacle has never been the virus but the sin of rejecting the work of God and the Spirit that have led many of them simply rejecting to take the tract, throwing it away once found it is about Christianity and avoiding our approach for a chat. This phenomenon is particularly obvious on the young generation who are well brought up from family of affluence in the urban area. It applies both to local Aussie , Western and people from Mainland China. But I observed that people from the country rural area and those of other religions background are more susceptible to listen and receive the gospel well. Anyway , in His time and in His way, God used us again to reap several fruit of the gospel after many unsuccessful trial. It was again yet another great lesson for us to realize who is the ONE working behind and we are just a bunch of undeserved vessel being used by God to do His work.

As for me, with a number of contacts in collaboration with Col and Yuen Hang, God gave me 8 divine appointments as recap below.

1) A couples from Taiwan who claimed to be Buddhists appeared very well informed of doctrinal truth of both Buddhism and Christianity. So they very likely are the people of a Cult that has embraced and integrated all five major religions. They knew Buddhism has no God and is just away to transcend one self to reach the Nirvana status aka becoming a Buddha. They knew about Jesus as His work to come to die for us, but still have fallen short of understanding that through His sacrificial death our sins can be pardon and be reconciled with God as His children and people.I walked with them to another bus station and just finished in time to share the gospel. Pray that it would be used by God to further His salvation plan on them.

2) An Aussie girl looks like this one in the picture on the bus let me walk with her to share the gospel , yet the bus came a bit too quick yet anyway the nutshell of the gospel was shared.

3) A local Aussie man on the bike but appeared to be an Atheist. He does not believe that human need to reach perfection and does not admit human have sins. He anyway rode way with an arrogant attitude though still accepting all my tracts. Pray that they will be used by God to break down his heart of iron..

4) Breea , a country girl from Ipswich of Catholic background, who was humble and nice enough to let me walk her way back home. She has limited knowledge of God and the Bible though she still consider herself a God follower. She certainly has no full idea about salvation as such also did not have full assurance of salvation. But she finally came to her understanding that through Jesus redemptive work dying on the cross, whoever accept Him as Savior and hence the lord of their lives will be saved in a sense of reconciling with God and regaining the lost heavenly citizenship with 100% certainty as it was completely the work of God , none of our good deeds count,

5) An UQ student from Bangladesh got pass Yuen Hang unaware of her tract, but the Holy Spirit told her this Muslim background looking person was approachable. She suggested me to approach him and really he was a man of open heart appeared very willing to listen to the gospel and in agreement of it. It was a pity that the bus came to cut our interactive conversation short. Pray for God's eventual work on this man.

6) A deep soul searching talk by Col with Mitchell who is of Catholic background family but not yet a Christian. He is a from Northern Queensland to come to study at UQ. His country boy background made him very friendly and approachable. Col was just used by God to be the light of his feet bringing him one step closer to profess the true faith in Christ. I anyway joined in at the end, encouraging him to get connected with Power to Change once he decided to receive Christ and to start his journey of sanctification.

It was all done just in time before the bus arrived.
